The Language Majors

The department offers three language majors:

Greek and Latin: Students gain competence in both ancient Greek and Latin and have the opportunity to read literary, philosophical, and historiographical texts in their original form.

Greek, Latin:  Students choose one language and explore its textual tradition in depth.

Placement

Students may place out of the elementary language sequence(s) and (very rarely) Greek or Latin 100 by taking a placement exam.  Students with strong scores in AP Latin frequently place into Latin 100 and gain 1 course/4 units of credit for placing out of Latin 1 and 2.  Students who place out of Greek or Latin 100 must take one additional upper-division Greek or Latin course.
