Biography

I was born in Green Bay, Wisconsin, and childhood experiences in the countryside around that city established my interest in rural societies and their narratives. I attended college out East (AB, University of Pennsylvania, 1990) but returned to the Midwest for graduate study. After receiving my PhD from the University of Chicago in 2001, I was hired as the founding curator for Berkeley’s Center for the Tebtunis Papyri. In 2004, I joined the then Department of Classics.
