This seminar is an advanced introduction to Latin epigraphy for graduate students. Inscriptions in Latin are essential documents for Roman political, social, economic, and religious history; they are vital sources for the study of the Latin language across time and across social strata; and some are works of literature in their own right. The seminar will be divided into three parts: an introduction of the study of Latin inscriptions, including the epigraphic habit, paleography, dating, and editorial conventions; a survey of the main genres of Latin inscriptions, including epitaphs, laws, sacred dedications, honorary texts, graffiti and depinti, and texts in verse (examples will mostly come from Rome and Italy); an opportunity for participants to work on an epigraphic research project of their own choice.
