In this course, we will read extensive portions of Vergil’s Aeneid in Latin. Our primary aim is to enjoy reading Vergil’s poetry and we will focus on acquiring the linguistic competence and literary critical skills needed to appreciate the text. Our selection will be drawn from the second half of the poem, which narrates the war in Italy between the Trojans and the Italians. We will also discuss the historical contexts for this story, with particular attention to themes of war, migration, and identity. Class requirements include regular quizzes, writing assignments, and a final exam.
