This semester we’ll be reading a much-discussed text that is central to the construction of early Christian history (and more) alongside a contemporary satire about a Cynic philosopher that offers curious parallels. The works in question are the martyrdom of Polycarp and Lucian’s Passing of Peregrinus; they will be supplemented by other pertinent readings, such as accounts of the gymnosophists Kalanos and Zarmanochegas. Requirements: midterm and final exams, a brief oral report, and regular contributions to in-class translation and discussion. Prerequisites: Greek 100 or equivalent study. (The readings are in Greek.)
