In this course, we will read selections from Homer’s Iliad in the original ancient Greek. In addition to developing language skills by reading Homeric Greek, we will examine the poem’s depictions of justice, emotion, violence, community, gender, mortality, politics, and how humans are to behave in the world. Written assignments will include midterm and final exams, quizzes, and short interpretive papers. Completion of Greek 1 and 2 or their equivalent is a prerequisite of this course; completion of Greek 100 or its equivalent is recommended.
