We will explore major themes from the literature and culture of ancient Greece, the Hebrew Bible, ancient Rome, and early Christianity that have been of special significance for the subsequent development of Western Civilization. The course will meet at twice-weekly lectures as well as in small groups for discussion. Lectures, discussions, and reading assignments will involve interdisciplinary approaches with an emphasis on the development of skill in writing.
REQUIREMENTS: Three papers and a final exam.
This class fulfills either half of UC Berkeley's Reading and Composition Requirement. It may also be used to fulfill the Breadth Requirements for Arts & Literature, Historical Studies, and Social & Behavioral Sciences.
