Please note that two years, or their equivalent, of college-level study of ancient Greek are a prerequisite for this course. In the course, we will read in Greek selections from Books 1 and 2 of Thucydides’ History of the Peloponnesian War and more extensive selections in English translation from all eight books. We’ll improve our grasp of Greek; come to an understanding of the distinctiveness of Thucydides’ Greek and its effects and implications; look at Thucydides’ depiction of the past, of society, and of the writing of history; and think about the writing of history as a cultural, intellectual, and political practice.
