Lecture: The Counterfactual Chorus of Euripides' Andromache
zoom

5:00 - 6:30pm PST

The first stasimon of Euripides' Andromache poses a provocative question: what if the Trojan War had never happened? Drawing from work on queer temporality and counterfactual form, this talk will explore how this ode revises the mythic past to imagine an alternative future. The talk will suggest that the performative role of the dramatic chorus makes it particularly well-suited to the articulation of possibilities and paths foreclosed by the dominant narratives of tragedy.
