In this class you will learn how ancient Greek and Latin are used in medical and scientific terminology today, to discover etymological techniques for deciphering new and unknown terms. We will read the ancient Hippocratic Oath and other texts by ancient medical writers to find out about the training of ancient physicians, treatments for fractures, beliefs about how disorders such as epilepsy arose, the experience of patients, and more. This fully online and asynchronous class will provide you with semantic skills in preparation for advanced work in the medical and biological sciences and has traditionally enhanced students’ performance in taking standardized examinations utilizing medical vocabulary. No knowledge of Greek or Latin is required and there are no required synchronous meetings.
